Family News In A Flash
June 20, 2005

June brings several very important occasions. Zoe turns 14 this year and Anne Lightfoot is 90.

HAPPY BIRTHDAYS, ZOE and ANNE

John and Nan count this their 14th Wedding anniversary. I count it a lucky day for all of us.

    HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, NANCY and JOHN
(or, since Nan got back from Wales,
Llwwgwoodll and Ijit , or something like that)

Sometime between now and tomorrow, it will become summer. I hope today's weather was a sample of things to come. It has been one of those clear, shining days when everything seems to carry an outline of sheer brilliance. I just came in from outdoors, where birds, squirrels and even some pesky pigeons are busy vandalizing the newly filled feeders and I just watch them with joy in being part of the action. although I'm comfortably sitting in one of the comfy, green chairs Dave gave us some time ago. Funny how a day like this can make one feel brand new. and that takes some doing at my age.

Yesterday was Father's Day. John showed up at 9:00 a.m. with all the "makings" of a holiday breakfast. One thing was lacking. No Nancy. She was somewhere on the road coming home from visiting her Mom and Judy when it suddenly dawned on her that she had a date with us.
John proved he could rise to the occasion and crafted a yummy breakfast, starting with something called POG (a mix of passion fruit, orange, and guava juice), his scrumptious scrambled eggs with mushrooms, onion, peppers, and cheese, and those wonderful cinnamon rolls that pop from a tube to be fresh baked. When I say "pop" I'm not kidding. When he twisted the container it popped so loud he dropped it onto the counter! Not to worry, though, they came out just fine.
A contrite Nancy arrived in time to help us enjoy the feast. We teased her about "getting to the age when we forget a lot" and it was hugs all around. I suspect it will be some time before she comes down from the clouds and that unforgettable visit she and Carolyn made to Wales.

Hildy arrived about 11:00 with a big jar of macadamia nuts for her Dad and stayed for several hours bailing me out of my paperwork swamp. When she left, she took with her three big boxes of the mess of pictures I've been trying to make sense of. She's a brave lady. That's a daunting task, but she will sort them into boxes by date, so they won't lie so heavy on my conscience. I shall be forever grateful.

Late afternoon brought Dave, Anne, Russ, and Ryan. Russ and his friend, Jana, are living at the Skykomish cabin, where Russ is manufacturing his own designed long skateboard. He is presently putting them for sale on EBay, successfully selling several in the short time he has been in operation. He is finding the sanding tedious, so his Gpa loaned him his electric sander to see if that would make it easier.
Jana has found herself a job as lifeguard at an outdoor pool in Sultan, which is a short drive from the cabin. Russ says she is glad to find a job that keeps her outdoors.
It hurt to watch Anne limping with what she thinks is a pinched nerve in her hip. She and Dave both seem to think it will get better with exercise, so they are back to their rowing. Sure hope it works.

Top of our list of achievers is Liz, who has been stretching herself mightily to work a 9 -5 office job, be Mom to her family, and go to college. Paul informed us that Liz has graduated with a degree in Speech and Language Pathology, and hopes to eventually work with kids from birth to 3 years old who have speech and language problems. She's not ruling out pursuing a Master's Degree at some time in the future.

June 18 was Anne Lightfoot's 90th birthday. She wouldn't hear of having a big party, but most of her family visited her at home, so she was celebrated whether she wanted it, or not. I'm sure she was pleased. After all, how many 90th birthdays can one have? Hildy told me Anne looked very pretty in an embroidered, red, Chinese-y tunic.
The Lightfoots are also celebrating Jim's graduation from the computer school he has been attending. I hear he managed a 4 point grade average. That's awesome. We wish him the very best.

June chronicles wouldn't be complete without the latest picture of Skyler Thomas Withrow, which his Mom e-mailed to me with the title "Pffft!"

I hear the Withrow family will be coming out to visit Hildy and Dan the later part of July.

Thought for the day: Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.

Signing off.. and about time!
